Stanislaus State Campus Community started this petition to Stanislaus State Students and

When we nominate a person of color in any position of power or leadership we prove to the ambitious, determined and aspiring minority scholar that a future in leadership can be possible and very real for them, too. When public institutions employ strong, ethical and professional leaders who come from a diversified background, it sends the message that success is not limited to one specific type of person. Representation not only empowers but inspires those who have traditionally been marginalized and denied a voice. It also motivates us as a nation to try to understand, learn and value the differences we all bring.

Stanislaus State hired a new Interim Vice President to lead the division of Student Affairs after the previous Vice President accepted a new role at another CSU. Dr. Paz Oliverez was then chosen to fill the role as Interim Vice President for Student Affairs at Stanislaus State. Dr. Oliverez has been the Interim Vice President for Student Affairs for nearly 7 months. During the short time that Dr. Oliverez has been at Stanislaus State, she has been proactive in expanding and improving policies and student success programs and brought real innovation on campus to help support students’ success. She has demonstrated her commitment to students especially those students who are under-served, underprivileged and minority and has given them a voice. She is the walking example for the many Hispanic students that attend Stanislaus State of what could be. In the short time that she has taken on the leadership role as Vice President, she has sat down with students, staff and faculty and simply listened and for once campus members felt that their voices and needs mattered. She is someone who won the hearts of many members of our campus community and it would be a diservice  to many students to let her go. It is disheartening to see Stanislaus State, a Hispanic Serving Institution, make the very poor decision to not hire Dr. Oliverez as Stanislaus State’s new Vice President for Student Affairs.

For those who oppose the decision to let Dr. Oliverez go please sign the petition! For those who feel that representation matters please sign the petition!

We need to let Stanislaus State know that the voices of students, staff and faculty matter!!
