Assisted Outpatient Treatment (AOT), aka Laura’s Law can bring restoration to the most severely mentally ill citizens in our community.

AOT is an evidence-based program which:

Reaches out to the small percentage of severely mentally ill who, due to their brain disorder, are not able to recognize their illness and therefore refuse treatment. Laura’s Law will not reach everyone but evidence from other counties and states show AOT will;

o   Reduce incarcerations by 65 - 87%

o   Reduce hospitalizations by 47 - 77%

o   Reduce emergency contacts by 44%

o   Reduce homelessness by 62%

o   Reduce harmful behavior by 44%

The Consumer is:
o   4x less likely to perpetrate serious violence

o   50% less likely to be victimized

o   75 – 80% of consumers remain in outpatient treatment after the court order expires.

 Saves money:

o    40 – 50% cost saving

o   High utilizers cost is $86k.  LL is $18k to $40k        

o   Nevada County saved $1.81 for every dollar spent and reduced actual hospital costs by $213k and actual incarceration costs by $75k

o  LA county pilot program reduced taxpayer costs by 40%
