Michael Speciale started this petition to Stanford University

The fact of the matter is, simply put, the speed and accessibility of Wi-Fi on this campus is unacceptable.

Before moving to online classes and final exams for this quarter, the broadband speed for both uploads and downloads on any of the 3 Stanford networks (eduroam, Visitor and Residences) was below the average value that a typical provider offers for their lowest package.

Given the fact that we have now transitioned to online classes and finals, the speed and reliability of the network should be at its peak, yet when tested the upload speed was 2.02 Mbps and the download speed was 70.5 Mbps. The FCC currently defines a “broadband” internet connection as one that provides at least 25 Mbps for download speed and 3 Mbps for upload. Upload speeds will be increasingly important as we approach finals week and will be submitting our final PSets, quizzes and - most importantly - final exams.

For an institution like Stanford and in times like these the Wi-Fi is key to our ability to conduct ourselves as students and complete our coursework. The speed and reliability of the Wi-Fi in its current state is inhibiting our ability to do work, learn and be members of this academic community.

If you feel the Wi-Fi has been especially slow and unreliable recently, please add your name to the petition!
