Titus N Sharman started this petition to Stanford University

Recently, a petition has begun circulating recommending that Stanford University cancel finals during Winter Quarter.  Cancelling finals, however, would jeopardize the key principles of fairness in education and equitable grading standards which anchor Stanford's honor code.  Finals should not be cancelled because of the following:

1. Cancelling finals would unfairly disadvantage those who have already studied hard for their finals and have worked hard in spring quarter.  Without finals, students would be discouraged from working hard during the last week, and students who worked harder earlier in the quarter would no longer reap the benefits of their hard work.

2. Cancelling finals would discourage students from studying hard and putting in effort for the past week, and thus prove detrimental to their education and their ability to understand the material sufficiently.

3. Cancelling finals would also completely alter the expectations established by class syllabi at the beginning of the quarter.  Students allocate their study time and work hard in the class with the expectation that the grading policies laid forth by the syllabus would be followed.  Abandoning this basic principle of fairness and clear information would destroy the purpose of a syllabus and transparent grading systems.
