Two weeks ago Brigham Young University seemingly lifted its ban on same sex romantic behavior by removing language alluding to this in its honor code which banned "all forms of physical intimacy that give expression to homosexual feelings."  On March 4th, the Church Education System for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints published a letter, in essence reversing this change and clarifying same sex romantic behavior as against the university honor code, a code that students can be punished or even expelled by the university if they do not follow.

Banning hugging and holding hands with members of the same sex is both absurd and toxic.  It’s not right for any LGBTQ BYU students to live in anxiety and fear over these rules, with many students making plans to transfer elsewhere.  It is unfair for students to have to live in fear that dating someone they love could jeopardize their education.  By continuing to engage in athletic competition with BYU, Stanford is ignoring these harmful policies.  In spirit of Stanford's reputation as an inclusive institution, we urge Stanford athletics to withdraw from athletic competitions against BYU when possible until harmful rules against LGBTQ students are revoked.
