The Town Centre administration has actively discouraged students from respectfully expressing their concerns through peaceful protest. On April 4th, 2019, students across Ontario planned a walk-out at 1:15 to protest against funding cuts for OSAP, which allows low-income families to access higher education. Although we are a private school, this issue affects many students in our school population and we believe in standing up for the rights of everyone. When the administration was informed of this walk-out, they threatened to suspend all students participating for 3 days.
We respect the right of the school to discipline students and we recognize that discipline is a part of learning. However, we also consider a sense of justice and morality to be an important part of a student's education. The TCPHS website states that the school prepares students to be "critical thinkers" in order to prepare them for a world with "rapidly changing parameters", and to let them "rise to the challenges with confidence". The administration told students that they should not participate in the protest because they "would not have been affected" by a cut in OSAP. We find this reasoning to be both unrealistic and morally unacceptable. Threatening students when they stand up for their rights is extremely unethical, and Town Centre should apologize for this.

The administration will post a written apology online and verbally apologize to all students in Town Centre for preventing them from being responsible citizens.
