STAND FOR HIGH SCHOOL MARCHING BANDS started this petition to President, WVSSAC Bernie Dolan and

We, the undersigned, respectfully request that all high school marching bands be perform in the stands during their home football games for as long as spectator attendance is permitted. It does not make sense why the bands cannot play from the stands if:

1. Cheerleaders cheer within inches of non-masked football players during a game.

2. Spectators sit in the stands in large groups, many of whom do not wear masks while not practicing social distancing. It is highly unlikely that any one football player, cheerleader or band member has three or four sets of parents in the stands.

Marching bands would remain seated and socially distanced and masked (when not performing) during a game under the supervision of their directors and band staff. Color guards would remain masked and six feet apart on the sidelines during a game under supervision of their auxiliary coordinator. Unlike cheerleaders--who are permitted to be on the sidelines--color guards could perform WHILE WEARING MASKS.These two measures alone are more proactive in nature than many spectators seem willing to follow. Is it possible that the quantity of “aerosol saliva" projected by musicians when playing an instrument is comparable to the saliva projected by cheerleaders when cheering? (This question is not intended to target cheerleaders. The inclusion of cheerleaders in that question is merely for presentation of a comparison.) The author of this petition is not a scientist and fully recognizes that this may not even be a viable comparison. However, when contemplating the issues in the above list, one cannot help but wonder how musicians performing six feet apart is more dangerous than even just one item on that list.

High school years quickly pass by and cannot be recaptured. Spectators who are not parents or guardians will have more football seasons during which they can watch football games. Yes, it is very unfortunate that current times call for limiting the number of spectators at a game and that such exclusions may be applied to grandparents, siblings, aunts, uncles, etc. How is it reasonable, though, to exclude a group of students who have ALWAYS been an INTEGRAL part of high school football games and expect those students and families to accept rules that are harsher than rules imposed on other groups associated with high school football?

HIGH SCHOOL MARCHING BANDS ONLY HAVE A FEW YEARS TO EXPERIENCE AND PARTICIPATE IN SUCH EVENTS. THEY ARE CURRENTLY BEING ROBBED OF THAT EXPERIENCE AND PARTICIPATION! BEING EXPECTED TO FOLLOW RULES THAT ARE NOT IMPOSED UPON OTHERS AT A FOOTBALL GAME. PLEASE, GENTLEMEN, REMEDY THIS SITUATION BY ALLOWING HIGH SCHOOL MARCHING BANDS TO PERFORM FROM THE STAND DURING HOME GAMES FOR AS LONG AS SPECTATORS ARE PERMITTED TO ATTEND GAMES.
