On September 5, 2017 Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced the Trump Administration’s decision to end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program (DACA). The news is heartbreaking, especially for those who are directly impacted, many of whom are our colleagues, friends, students, classmates and neighbors.

Since 2012, DACA has provided limited protection for undocumented youth who came to the United States as children, allowing students and many others to live and learn without the fear of deportation, to acquire a work permit, and to travel abroad. Nearly 800,000 individuals are currently protected by DACA -- and an estimated one million more would be eligible if the program were to continue.

Higher education is a beacon of opportunity, championing the pursuit of knowledge, inclusive excellence and service as catalysts for positive social change and civic responsibility. As students, families, faculty, staff, and alumni, we support our DACA and undocumented community members currently facing an uncertain future and potential deportation.

Ending DACA means that these young people – Americans in all but legal status – will lose their ability to contribute fully to our campuses, to our communities, and to our country. We are stronger because of the valuable contributions made by DACA/undocumented students and colleagues in our classrooms, workforce, communities, and beyond. Their loss, and that of other undocumented people, is fundamentally our country’s loss.

We ask each of us, as members of colleges and universities and our extended communities from across the country, to call on our congressional leaders to protect these young people, and institute a legislative solution to support a permanent path forward. We pledge to call our elected representatives. We pledge to urge their support for legislative remedies.

We must act now. This is both a moral imperative and a national necessity.

We are strongest together.
