A 12 year old Muslim pupil in West London was subjected to being physically,  mentally and verbally attacked within school premises  -  a place where our children should feel safe.

The victim sustained both physical and emotional torture resulting in her headscarf being forcibly removed , to her this meant  taking away her beliefs.  To make things worse , this cowardly attack was recorded and observed by ten female pupils encouraging this behaviour leaving the victim traumatised  . The news spread to other pupils within minutes and rather than adopting empathy, the majority of pupils found this amusing thus condoning such behaviour, and we wonder why there are so many racially motivated fatalities… Is this the country we want to live in and expose our future generation to? 

The perpetrator is always the one protected,   as an expulsion will lead to them suffering from long term impacts, resulting in the victim being punished and left feeling vulnerable and ostracised. 

Parents have an integral part to play and need to take full ownership for their child’s behaviour . This  behaviour should result in a fine/sanction  with the potential of leading to expulsion . Only then will parents take this matter seriously as it will be in the best interest of their child to do so.

School leaders need to take back control and adopt, develop and enforce stringent rules as the current strategies are clearly not working .  Tax payers money should be utilised in educating children not dealing with anti social behaviour .  

Implementing new strategies in tackling racial bullying will bring us one step closer to having a diverse and inclusive country,  displaying respect for everyone of all backgrounds, and role modelling positive behaviour to our younger generation and leading by example.
