Keep our Athletic Director

Stamford is looking to make major budget cuts that will impact the lives of our student athletes, coaches and community. One of the cuts would be the reduction of one athletic director. This would eliminate Chris Passamano (the current Stamford High AD) and give Dick Cerone (the current Westhill AD) the daunting task of running athletics for all three public high schools. Cerone would be in charge of eligibility, scheduling of games/competitions, allotting time for the use of field/gyms for practice, busing, evaluating coaches, interviewing every coach every three years, hiring new coaches, ordering equipment, communicating new rules and regulations with all coaches, supporting the student athletes, and celebrating their accomplishments for close to 1,500 students, over 100 coaches and thousands of parents and fans. To do all of this well will be next to impossible for one person.
Since the position became administrative two years ago these two athletic directors have put in countless hours, surpassing their expected time commitments by a landslide. In addition to other administrative duties at the school, Passamano also started a food program for free grab and go meals after school for all students, created a social media presence to celebrate all of our student athletes, implemented an emergency plan for all sporting events that ended up saving a referee's life, and kept students connected during distance learning with an athletics website designed to provide workouts and tips for all.

To cut one AD and ask the other to pick up his workload would cause the coaches, athletes and parents to lose out. A well run sports program not only develops the body, but enhances the mind and heart. The district mission statement is centered around developing the mind, body and heart of the students yet we're looking to make major cuts to athletics which will directly impact so many.
As we transition out of this trying time and return to "normal" we will need our athletic directors to navigate the new protocols and safety regulations that will undoubtedly be put in place to keep our athletes, coaches, officials, parents, and fans safe. We will need our athletic directors to guide us out of this troubling time. We need our athletic directors to continue to keep the day to day operations running smoothly so we as coaches can continue to focus on developing our student athletes into better versions of themselves.

Please sign the petition. We need our athletic director. We need our sports.
