River Musi (also called Musinuru and used to be known as Nerva during the Qutub Shahi period), is a tributary of Krishna river in the Deccan plateau which flows through Telangana. Hyderabad stands on the bank of the river Musi with the river dividing the historic old city and new city. As the river flows through Hyderabad, it turns into a giant sewer filled with garbage and industrial waste from the city. The status of Musi river in Telangana is horrifying as the river has become a reptile of untreated domestic and industrial waste dumping out from the city due to the lack of planning and indiscriminate urbanisation. The river is an integral part of Hyderabad and it must be restored of its cleanliness and beauty.

It is estimated that nearly 350 MLD of polluted water sewage originating from Hyderabad and Secunderabad flow into the river. The pollution is largely attributed to industrial effluents that are mainly let out by pharmaceutical and bulk drug companies which can be found in and around Hyderabad. Fishes in the river can’t survive in these conditions and marine life is affected. When water evaporates naturally due to the sunlight, a large amount of these chemicals continue to stay in the riverbed. Additionally, the soil on each side of the river is also absorbing elements and this has reached a saturation point, thereby allowing these chemicals to seep into the groundwater and water table as well. leafy vegetables absorb these chemicals quickly. A lot of food for cattle in Hyderabad are grown with water from the river and the milk from the cattle is then sold across the city. The chemicals, as a result of being present in plants and cattle, also enter the food chain. As they make their way higher up the chain, the concentration of the substances amplifies making the problem worse. Water pollution has directly affected agriculture, stockbreeding and fishing, creating high-risk conditions in the food intake. the polluted water of the Musi River is the main cause of the health problems like: arthritis, diarrhoea, jaundice, skin allergies, stomach pain, malaria, food poisoning, eye diseases and all kinds of pediatric problems in the area.

A few steps the government or stakeholders can take to resolve these problems could be to take up methods like chlorination to prevent the spread of waterborne diseases such as cholera, dysentery, and typhoid. they could install a plastic interceptor in the river to prevent debris from entering the world's oceans from rivers. It could extract debris autonomously and can extract 50,000 kg of plastic per day. This is a great solution for the Musi river as the interceptor can eliminate a large amount of garbage from the music river.
