Renovate Burton upon Trent's Ferry Bridge. Staffordshire County Council must ensure that this historic icon is restored to its former glory

This petition made change with 176 supporters!

Concerns are being raised by the people of Burton upon Trent that Staffordshire County Council are purposely allowing the deterioration of the Ferry Bridge which was given to the town in 1889 by Michael Arthur Bass (Baron Burton) and declared free of toll, to enable them to ultimately remove and demolish this iconic structure.  The loss of this bridge would thereby split the town back into two halves, as it was up until the late 19th century, once again forcing people to either use public transport or private cars/taxis etc., to access the other side of the river increasing our carbon footprint.

The alternative is to walk along a narrow footway at the side of an extremely busy road bridge or cycle where no cycle lanes are provided.  A road bridge where a number of accidents have occurred and a child was fatally injured, which is poorly lit at night and during the Winter months and carries extremely heavy traffic of all types including large trucks/lorries making it totally unsuitable for use by pedestrians or cyclists.

By keeping the Ferry Bridge as a functional footbridge that is currently frequently and regularly used we can make sure that it remains not only an important part of the heritage of the town but continues to provide some part of Burton's contribution to a  greener profile by enabling townspeople and visitors to easily cross the river without having to resort to the use of fossil fuels.

By signing this petition you can make sure that Staffordshire County Council understand that the Ferry Bridge is an important structure, not just to Burtonians from the practical viewpoint but also to everyone who lives in/visits/passes through Burton upon Trent  and you will have played a part in enabling this beautiful historical iconic bridge to be saved for future generations.
