A group of interested St. Thomas resident's are hoping to work with the City to apply for a joint Federal and Provincial Grant to have a Community Centre with an Aquatics Facility.

As a quick overview, the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sport have put together a $30B, 10-year grant program for communities to apply for. According to the website, "the Community, Culture and Recreation stream will support community infrastructure priorities across the province, improving access to and / or quality of community, cultural, and recreation priority infrastructure projects."

The cost allocations are extremely favourable for municipalities, as our contribution would be under 27% of the cost (and could include costs such as land acquisition and servicing). Although there would still be associated costs, capitalizing on this funding opportunity could minimize the tax implications for resident's of St. Thomas for this well-needed facility!

Noteworthy Considerations/Updates:

- Oct 21, 2019: Council passed a motion to have the feasibility of properly submitting an application by the Nov 12 deadline, at Reference Committee. (Although, Council did not unanimously support this.)

- A written petition of 500 signatures in favour of this initiative was previously brought to Council.

- The benefits for this type of facility would be far reaching, including providing: opportunities for sports excellence, addressing childhood inactivity, providing activity space for an aging population, and many benefits to health and well-being (e.g. physiotherapy).

- There are currently no architectural plans for the facility at this time, but various suggestions have been made on where such a facility could be located and what exactly it should contain. Please provide written comments if you feel strongly about what such a facility would need to be successful in St. Thomas.

Please sign if you support an initiative to investigate the feasibility of this project for our City, and feel it will only make our community better, for all people of all ages. No immediate tax implications are associated with support, as this is just the early stages of gauging community support.
