Sandusky Central Catholic School forced its band and choir director to resign this week, shortly after officials learned he and his boyfriend recently became engaged to be married. Brian Panetta, who is in his fifth year of employment with the district, initially received a letter of termination Jan. 3, which stated he was fired for violating the moral and religious teachings of the Catholic Church.
Reinstate Brian Panetta as SMCC Band and Choir Director.
I am appalled at the forced resignation of Brian Panetta, the band and choir director at Sandusky St. Mary Catholic Central. As the director for nearly five years, he served in excellence for the school and his students.
Upon hearing of his engagement to his partner, Brian was forced to resign.
This decision was not based on his job performance, but solely and blatantly, on the fact that Brian Panetta is a gay man in a loving, committed relationship.
Who Brian is, and who he loves has no bearing whatsoever on his ability to teach his students. He is a talented, qualified and capable band director, who is dedicated to both his profession and his faith.
If Brian Panetta's dismissal is based on the Catholic Church's teaching on sacred marriage, then I must ask: Would Mr. Panetta have been fired if he were not a homosexual engaged to his partner, but a heterosexual man divorced and remarried? If he had a child out of wedlock?
I call on you to do the what is fair, what is just, what is ethical; I urge you to reconsider the dismissal of Brian Panetta.
