St. Lawrence University Green Fund: sponsored by DivestSLU

St. Lawrence's Divestment Club is working to establish a working "Green Fund" in order to advance campus sustainability by providing funding to long-term, comprehensive projects. This fund would be accessible to both students and administration, and be managed through the Office of Sustainability and University Advancement. Along the lines of the new #EveryLaurentian fundraising campaign, alumni would have the opportunity to donate directly to a fund for campus sustainability, increasing transparency of donations and giving an opportunity for environmentally-minded alumni to give back to SLU. The fund would be managed according to the goals outlined in the Climate Action Plan and with the intention of jumpstarting projects that would make St. Lawrence University carbon-neutral over the long-term.

We are looking for the support of both alumni and St. Lawrence students, so that we can move forward into the next phase of establishing the Green Fund.

Moving forward, we intend to:

  • Write a complete proposal for the Green Fund to present to St. Lawrence administration, including the Board of Trustees and the University Advancement Office.
  • Reach out to alumni to better understand their concerns about sustainability at St. Lawrence and if they are interested in donating to a fund with the specific goals of completing large-scale sustainability projects on campus.
  • Develop management strategies for the Green Fund that would insure it's long-term success and support by both administration and student organizations.
  • Establish a process for vetting project proposals for their long-term success of helping campus meet carbon neutrality, while also taking into account the opinions and vision of both students, faculty and administration.
  • Secure written donation commitments that would total to at least $100,000.
