St. Edwards Double A Grading Policy for Spring 2020

This petition is to urge the St. Edwards University Administration to adopt a Double A grading policy for the semester of Spring 2020. This would mean that all students receive an A/A- in each class.

The novel COVID-19 virus pandemic is a national crisis. This is an irrefutably extenuating circumstance. The relocation taken as a precaution against the virus has a huge impact on students.

Students who are now without food security, internet access or reliable housing will be expected to perform at the same level as they did before.

International students have been relocated to different time zones that will not coincide with the electronic schedule. Tests scheduled online may mean some students having to take a final at 1am.

Many students will have younger siblings who have also had their education suspended and will have to invest time and energy in providing childcare at home.
Still others will be caring for  family members in grave risk at this time, such as those with immunodeficiencies and the very old or very young, or may be at grave risk themselves. Amidst fearing for your life and/or the lives of your loved ones, academics should not be an additional major concern to bear at this time.

An increasing number of universities such as Stanford, MIT, Smith, Grinnell and Northwestern have implemented changes to their grading policy in recognition of the impact COVID-19 has had on students ability to participate and focus on academia. We ask that St. Edwards do the same.

In recognition of how a global pandemic has impacted everyone’s lives and families, we hope that a Double A grading policy can relieve students of some pressure in a time with so many pressing concerns.
