Oppose parking charges at Batford car park

Oppose parking charges at Batford car park
Why this petition matters

The Liberal Democrat administration at Albans and District Council is proposing to impose new charges at the currently free Southview Rd Car Park.
The reason given is that the car park is used predominantly by residents for long term parking. Despite questioning, no evidence has been forthcoming to support this claim. However, the Council aims to make substantial income from this change.
From April it would cost the same as Town Centre parking:
• £1.50 for one hour parking
• £3.00 for 2 hour
• £3.80 for 3 hour
• £5.00 for 4 hour
• £6.20 for 6 hour
• £12.50 for over 6 hour
They are also imposing charges on Sundays and Bank holidays.
This car park is a valuable public service. It is used by local workers on low incomes, shoppers at the local Tesco supermarket and visitors to the Malta pub, the local Methodist church, the cafe, the hairdressers and other small local businesses. Charging will adversely impact their staff and trade.
It will mean that drivers will try to park on already congested local roads, causing issues for residents. It will not only increase on-road parking, but it will also increase pollution in a residential neighbourhood, with many families, as drivers cruise around looking for somewhere to park.
Mary Maynard the local Conservative Councillor, is opposing these charges. The car park should remain free. Help her by signing this petition and making your voice heard.
