Stop Sexualized Dresscodes
Stop Sexualized Dresscodes
School is supposed to promote a safe environment,
Dress codes instilled by schools enforce a standard of modesty contributing to the objectification of women.
Dress codes amongst woman are enforced so that students are less likely to distract their male peers
Instead of teaching girls not to dress a certain way, boys should be taught to respect female image and focus on learning.
The message of dress coding gives to girls is at they are responsible for the way boys think and behave.
Gives the message to boys that they are not responsible for their own thoughts, actions, and behaviors.
Sets up a culture of what is seen in rape situations
Not being allowed to show cleavage, shorts being too short, bra strap being visible, abdomen showing are rules made to prevent “distraction” my boobs, my back, an my legs should not be sexualized in a place where i am supposed to feel safe.
While dresscode theoretically applies to all genders, it is targeted at women, boys are RARELY dress coded.
The idea of dress coding woman based on their female anatomy teaches girls that their bodies are dangerous and sexualized.
Teaches stigma that boys are biologically programmed to harass and objectify them.
Non gender and transgender student’s also express their identities in clothing, limiting what they wear and how they express themselves can be mentally harmful and is NOT promoting a safe and welcoming environment.
Everyone deserves to feel safe, comfortable, and proud with their identity and image. Enforcing dress codes prevents that from becoming a reality.
Not only that! We are in the summer! It is 80 degree’s outside! No staff should tell a little girl what she can and can not wear!
Oregon has created a model policy that has helped woman feel safe and equal in their environment.
These values are:
All students should be able to dress comfortably for school without fear of or actual unnecessary discipline or body shaming
All students and staff should understand that thet are responsible for managing their own personal “distractions” without regulating individual students/ clothing self expression
Teachers can focus on teaching without the the additional and often uncomfortable burden of dress code enforcement
Students should not face unnecessary barries to school attendance r
Reasons for conflict and inconcistent discipline should be minimized whenever possible
A STUDENT DRESS CODE SHOULD ACCOMPLISH MANY GOALS: maintain a safe learning environment in class where protective or supportive clothing is needed, such as biology/chemistry (eye or body protection), dance (bare feet tights/ leotards) or PE (athletic attire/shoes)
Allow students to wear clothing of their choice that is comfortable
Allow students to wear clothing that expresses their self-identified gender
Allow students to wear religious attire without fear of discipline or discrimination
Prevent students from wearing clothing with offensive images or language, including
