REJECTION OF PROPOSED NAME ‘LYNCH’ FOR SUBURB AREA 7

New Suburb Name ‘Nirimba Fields’ proposed to enhance Heritage Value

The residents of Suburb Area 7 strongly oppose and reject the name ‘Lynch’ proposed by the Blacktown City Council to the Geographical Names Board (GNB) in December 2017 without any consultation with the residents of this Suburb Area.

Originally, Council proposed 3 names (Cable - another ex-Labor Mayor, Nirimba and Stonecutters). The latter 2 were rejected by GNB. For unknown reasons, Lynch was imposed on the residents WITHOUT CONSULTATION. When questioned at a Community Forum held at The Ponds on 30 April 2018, as to why Lynch was proposed (when Cable was proposed by Council in the first place), Mayor Bali sheepishly conceded that to him, he found the name Lynch better sounding than Cable. This is an undemocratic and flawed decision taken by Mayor Bali and the team. His claim of having held extensive consultations in our Suburb Area, rings hollow. His claim that there were many submissions in favour of Lynch (which was passed on to GNB) is also invalid as they came from Area Suburbs 2 and 4 where Lynch was also proposed, but was rejected. Submissions from other Suburb Areas CANNOT be imposed on Suburb Area 7. There would not have been submissions from Suburb Area 7 as the name was NEVER proposed to the residents of this area. The whole saga confirms a FLAWED PROCESS, lacking good governance by the Council members.

We understand that GNB rejected Nirimba (one of the 3 names originally proposed by the Council) as a suburb with the same name exists in Western Australia. However, according to GNB’s Geographical Names Board of NSW Policy (Place Naming) in Point  8.2 Place names other than localities states that “ … but new place names may be duplicated provided there is no duplication of the name within the local government or adjoining local government”. Based on this, we propose that GNB name this Suburb Area NIRIMBA FIELDS in recognition of the greater heritage value which is closer to the hearts of ALL Australians as opposed to a handful of Labor proponents who are politically driven to leave their party footprints in this historical area. The area has been called Nirimba since 1953 (65 years) as compared to ex-Mayor Lynch who just served as Mayor for 4 years (1981-85). The Council has to work above politics for ALL its residents not only the Labor faithfuls.

PLEASE NAME THE AREA AS ‘NIRIMBA FIELDS’ if GNB maintains rejection of the name of Nirimba.

Our objection to the Council's proposed name of Lynch is based on 3 key aspects:

1.     The choice of Lynch is a politically driven decision. The Council's own Proposal illustrates this.

2.     The person being honoured by naming this suburb, former Mayor Jim Lynch, already have enough monuments in his recognition.

3.    The word Lynch is an inappropriate word for a Suburb Name as it has a connotation with a criminal act especially associated with hate crimes

WE SEEK THE SUPPORT OF GNB, MEDIA, FRIENDS AND THOSE WHO LOVE THE HISTORY OF NIRIMBA AND THE LOVE AND RESPECT IT DESERVES AND REJECT THE ILL MEANINGED AND POLITICISED MOTIVE TO PUSH THE NAME OF LYNCH
