It’s no secret that this school year has been largely different than years past. Between taking care of siblings, dealing with sick family members, and learning from home, students have been under a lot of pressure in all aspects of life. While SHA has done its best to adapt to this new learning style, we believe more can be done to alleviate the stress students are feeling. SHA always encourages us to communicate what we’re feeling, and we hope faculty and staff take our concerns regarding midterms into consideration.

Adapting to this new learning style has no doubt been tough for many students. Switching back and forth from online to in-person school has made it hard for students to stay organized. We know these are unprecedented times, and are grateful for all SHA has done to ensure a consistent learning environment. In light of many schools cancelling midterms (Hamden High, North Branford, Hopkins, Notre Dame), we think it would be the right thing to do, and would lift a weight off everyone’s shoulders.

Seniors in particular have dealt with the loss of so many class events and activities that make senior year so memorable. The class of 2021 has consistently been one of the most spirited and cohesive classes; from Spirit Week to pep rallies. Seniors will not get a chance to enjoy their coveted senior privileges, simple things we have looked forward to since freshman year. Cancelling midterms would be a great way to acknowledge the struggles and loss seniors are dealing with. Not to mention, many colleges require mid-year grades. These may be the deal-breaker when it comes to acceptances. The college process has been exceptionally difficult this year, and adding midterms will stress seniors even further. Colleges have made SATS and ACTS optional, which only places further emphasis on our grades. Overall, in light of the pandemic and all the struggles students are facing, we believe students should be exempt from midterms this year. On behalf of the class of 2021, we are asking SHA to cancel this years midterm exams.
