Why this petition matters

Started by Patrick Longmire

The Corner Store (a Municipal Liquor Store owned by the City of Spring Grove) has struggled to maintain consistent profits over the last few decades and actually lost money in 2020 and 2021 (projected with November 2021 data). Minnesota currently doesn’t allow a 2nd off-sale liquor license if the city has a municipal liquor store. It’s an outdated law from the 1930s.

The Corner Store's lack of growth can be attributed to its unremarkable and unchanged store front. This causes customers year after year to travel to liquor stores as far as La Crosse and Onalaska. When people leave town to find items they can’t find with the limited selection at The Corner Store, they end up buying groceries, go out to eat, get gas, etc. The more this happens, and the more customers buy products outside of Spring Grove, the harder it will be to maintain our independently-run grocery store surround by Wal-Marts, Dollar Generals and other big box stores.

If Red’s obtains sales from a liquor department, it would strengthen the longevity of the entire grocery store, which is very much an anchor of this community. In fact, we anticipate more customers from other communities who could potentially stay in town and stop at other local shops or restaurants. This will help our entire community thrive and grow!
