Spread Awareness About The Weapons Effect
Why this petition matters
We want to explore further the relationship between weapons effect and their effect on violence in adolescents. Bushman's article reveals that seeing weapons primed aggressive thoughts, yet we wondered how the weapons effect translates to first-person shooter video games. A study by Justin H. Chang (Chang et al., 2019) tested this relationship by exposing children to video games with different exposures to video game weapons and then observing their interactions with real-life weapons. The results showed that those who played video games that included violence with guns and swords were more likely to touch a real, disabled handgun, handle the weapon for more extended periods of time, and pull the trigger more times, even when aimed at themselves or their partner. The research suggests that video games may contribute to the rise in school shootings and gun violence in adolescents in America. Therefore, we hope to apply our knowledge by reaching out to shooting-style video game developers to implement more protective safety features for children.
A potential step for the game developers is to create a series of disclaimers before the player begins playing, while the player is playing, or after the player finishes to reinforce the player to take a break after and avoid interacting with any physical weapons. For example, the disclaimers could read along the lines, "All of the depictions in this game are fictional. Please take a break after playing and do not attempt to recreate these acts in real life." This small action can potentially save many innocent lives from adolescent gun violence.
