Make renaming RT. 1 in Spotsylvania a Community Choice
Residents of Spotsylvania County are you aware? Please take ACTION to make your voice heard…
We want to make you aware that members of the Spotsylvania Board of Supervisors (representing their own interest and not our larger community) voted for a resolution to the General Assembly of the State of Virginia to name the section of Route 1 in Spotsylvania to “Patriot Hwy” bypassing the state default rename of Richmond Hwy. without ANY community input. They have not sent the resolution so WE, the Spotsylvania community CAN change this with your VOICE!
The reason Jefferson Davis Hwy (RT. 1) is being changed is because it glorifies individuals from the past who where traitors to the United States - and representative of only a segment of the Commonwealth’s population.
The name change should be inclusive of all residents of Spotsylvania County or even the state of Virginia - and thus, not in anyway partisan or divisive. While the Board of Supervisors claims “Patriot Hwy” is intended to honor our Veterans, the word “Patriot” has been adopted by an extremely partisan political group in Spotsylvania county. As such it should be disqualified from any recommendation of a name that would represent ALL Spotsylvanians. Veterans would be honored by naming the highway “Veterans Hwy” because they do not en mass refer to themselves as “patriots”. Moreover, the default name of Richmond Hwy is also more inclusive of the residents of the entire Commonwealth of which Spotsylvania is a part.
LET YOUR VOICE BE HEARD - Please sign this petition to show your support to REQUIRE the Spotsylvania Board of Supervisors to take Community input regarding renaming RT. 1 or else adopt the default name of Richmond Highway. YOUR VOICE MATTERS!
