Sports should count for P.E. requirement at Newton North
We, the students of Newton North, request that sports should satisfy our P.E. requirement for that school year, as is the case in many surrounding school districts. Students who do sports after school, in addition to the curriculums' mandated quarter-long P.E. class, are being robbed of the opportunity to take a full-year class, a class better suited for their education, or simply a free block to relieve stress. We would also like to see an additional course in the morning that does not require passing a swim test for those of us who do not participate in sports after school.
Currently, for students who want to use their entire schedule for classes, the only option they have is to take A.M. lifeguard training. Now let me reiterate, for clarity, the absurdity of that statement. Students who cannot swim 300 yards, tread water for three minutes, and retrieve a brick from the bottom of the deepest part of the swimming pool cannot take that class, regardless of whether they do sports outside of school or not. And even if they do pass the test, there is no guarantee that they will be placed in the class.
