With the transition to online school, seniors have already had a hard time trying to grasp the thought that their days of high school are over. For 3 years, since we walked in as freshmen, we watched the seniors before us have the time of their lives as they were in the senior spotlight. Telling us how great senior year is, and how we should look forward to all of the fun events seniors get to be involved in. Class of 2020 has now been cut short of these memorable times. The events and activities that we have looked forward to during our high school careers, are now gone in the blink of an eye. No senior night, no prom, no senior breakfast, no senior all nighter, no move up con, and most importantly, no graduation. We understand that safety and health is one of the big priorities within the world right now, but the interaction at graduation is the key factor in what makes it so special. Celebrating with your friends and family by your side, exchanging smiles and seeing all of the hard work and dedication pay off. Now, we get to grab our phone or computer and watch the screen to be “honored” and “celebrated” as a 2020 graduate. A diploma will be sent in the mail, without a handshake received. We will text our friends and say “we did it”, while imagining what a real graduation would have felt like. Being left feeling alone, and not celebrated as a whole, we would only wish for a normal year. So much has been taken from us already, but taking away the end celebration of high school? Some may believe that a virtual graduation would be more beneficial. But seniors deserve more recognition than just through a screen, sitting in their house, unable to laugh, smile, and enjoy it with their peers. With everything we have been going through, we deserve a say in how we want our high school career to end. Class of 2020 with always be remembered for the coronavirus, online school, and social distancing. But the more important thing is how you want class of 2020 to remember their senior year and the accomplishment of graduating high school. Seniors should get a say in how we want OUR high school career to end. Not having adults decide for us.
