Speed Progress Against Cancer - Stand in Support of Clinical Trials and Cancer Research
Clinical trials are research studies that provide the vital link between breakthroughs in the lab and new treatments that extend and improve the lives of patients with cancer – patients like Lori Cuffari, who was diagnosed with a thyroid cancer that was resistant to standard treatment. Thanks to a clinical trial, today Lori is one of more than 13 million cancer survivors in the US.
Since 1984 the Conquer Cancer Foundation of ASCO Grants & Awards Program has supported more than a thousand cancer research projects -more than $75 million in research grants to move clinical research forward- and that support is helping to conquer cancer every day. In fact, Lori’s doctor, Marcia Brose, MD, PhD is a Conquer Cancer Foundation grant recipient.
Despite the promise offered by clinical trials, less than 5% of adults with cancer enroll in them. By contrast, more than 60% of children with cancer are enrolled in clinical trials. Approximately three-quarters of all children with cancer survive long-term, compared with half of adults. The increased survival rate for children is due in no small part to their higher rate of participation over time in clinical trials.
Without clinical trials, we wouldn’t have new cancer therapies. Sign this pledge to help spread the word about the lifesaving importance of clinical trials and to show your support for continued investment in cancer research.
