Stop the violence against peaceful voters in Catalonia

Today, the world is watching images of Spain's Paramilitary police violently charging against peaceful voters, including many elderly, as they raid polling stations in Catalonia. This blatant attack on civil rights violates the democratic values and basic principles we Americans share as a nation.
Their goal is to disrupt a Self-Determination Referendum, that has the support of 80 percent of the Catalan population. The Catalan people want to democratically decide whether to become an independent Republic.
Agents are beating defenseless citizens with batons. As people bleed in the street, Paramilitary police are also firing tear gas and rubber bullets. Laughing guards sexually harassed a woman and deliberately broke her fingers one by one.
These actions are outrageous. No one should ever have to protect their voting sites and materials against police with their own bodies. No one should be a target of military violence for peacefully exercising their right of self-determination.
We urge our Senate Majority Leader, The Honorable Mitchell McConnell, and The Honorable Paul Ryan, Speaker of the House of Representatives, as well as all members of Congress from both sides of the aisle to issue a Statement of Condemnation to the Government of Spain, for this outrageous attack against human rights in Catalonia.
