Maria Halverson started this petition to Spader Bay Residential Community and

Spader Bay is currently comprised of a community of private owners who value and care about preserving the bay that they have loved, cared for, and used for many decades.

As of recently, the City of Chelan is entertaining the purchase of approximately 9.5 acres with waterfront/beach access on Spader Bay for the purpose of public use and access.

The owners at Spader Bay condominiums and in the greater Spader Bay community oppose this land purchase and proposed use of the land. We are collectively concerned that this would negatively impact the look and feel of our community, invite trespassers onto private property, increase noise, and produce garbage and litter in the bay, creating safety and environmental hazards, as well as reduce home values and appeal. We also don’t feel like this land purchase would solve the lake access issue the city hopes to resolve.

We are also concerned with how public use of the land would be regulated and maintained, whether it’s used for a trail system or beach access. The city claims that there is a need for increased lake access. We fear that the topography of the property might not provide the best solution for this, and invite the public to get creative on how to access the waterfront with little to no regulation by the city. This could result in additional trash left at beach side, beach goers setting up tents to camp, and provide easy access to private property nearby. Even with adequate beach/waterfront access, provided the city finds a way to accommodate for this, we are worried there will be an overall increase in trash and litter in the bay.

Currently, Spader Bay properties are not easily accessible to the public, unless via watercraft or private roads. Opening the land for public use would overall decrease the appeal and value for current owners and residents.

The funds being considered for this project could be put to better use. The topography of the Spader Bay land is challenging. We should consider using those same funds on alternative projects, such as preservation efforts for our beautiful lake. We should look at solving congestion and parking issues, as well as fixing sidewalks and curbs. We should be concerned with maintaining the integrity of our water quality and improving our natural landscape that makes Chelan so special.

If lake access is indeed a problem, we should further explore other, more easily accessible pieces of property for public use, such as three fingers, as viable options. We don’t believe the city is fixing any problems or using money wisely by purchasing the land at Spader Bay, but is instead, creating problems.
