Tara Parks started this petition to Southwest Vermont Supervisory Union and

We demand that all students in the Southwest Vermont Supervisory Union are entitled to and should have equal access to, full time, in person instruction.

In the landmark case of Brown v. Board of Education the Supreme Court said “The right to an equal educational opportunity is one of the most valuable rights you have.” (aclu.org 2021 American Civil Liberties Union. Your Right to Equality in Education.)

Remote, hybrid and/or two day school weeks with shortened days hardly seems equal while some of the kids in our very own county still attend school full time. This pandemic does not justify the upheaval of our education system, nor does it change our rights to equal education opportunities.

Vermont Education Statutes state "The right to public education is integral to Vermont's constitutional form of government and its guarantees of political and civil rights. Further, the right to education is fundamental for the success of Vermont's children in a rapidly-changing society and global marketplace as well as for the State's own economic and social prosperity. To keep Vermont's democracy competitive and thriving, Vermont students must be afforded substantially equal access to a quality basic education."  S.V.S.U has a plan to reopen which is guided by the trajectory of the virus and is not influenced by child development and the importance of a meaningful education. This should change. Reopening schools full time for in person instruction should be the priority for all of us if we want our future generations to succeed.

Help us by signing in support.  We need to hold our government and our school system accountable, no more excuses.
