The SPLC refuses to remove Maajid Nawaz from its list

Nov 1, 2016 — First, I would just like to thank you all for your support, as I had no idea that my petition would reach over 8,000 signatures in under three days.

Today, I was informed that the Southern Poverty Law Center has no intention of removing Maajid Nawaz from their list. Heidi Beirich, a director of the Intelligence Project at the SPLC, maintains that Nawaz will not be removed because his rhetoric consists of "conspiracy theories" which are problematic, and incite anti-Muslim bigotry. Her statements are as follows:

“That kind of talk is not what we want people to discuss when discussing Muslims. These are conspiracy theories and it’s dangerous to portray every Muslim essentially as an infiltrator,”

“My problem with that is he’s muddying that image with these conspiracy theories, so it’s hard for me to believe that that is his goal when he’s doing these other things,”

“He doesn’t sound much different from Pamela Geller or David Horowitz or some of these other people about how Muslims are infiltrating everywhere. So my suggestion would be, if that’s what he’s trying to do, then he should ditch the conspiracy theories.”

(They made no mention of Ayaan Hirsi Ali.)

If the SPLC chooses to maintain their position and their broad criteria for what constitutes an "anti-Muslim extremist," then I would submit that they should amend their list of 15 so-called anti-Muslim extremists to include anybody who supports Muslim reformists, anybody who believes that Islam and liberalism can be reconciled, anybody who challenges political Islamism, and anybody who stands up for the rights of oppressed and marginalized people in the Islamic world. If the SPLC will not remove Maajid and Ayaan from their inflammatory list, then I would urge them to include me on it, as well as the 8,000+ supporters of this motion.
