Baby changing and breastfeeding facilities at Daisy Hill Hospital

'Baby changing facilities', 'nursing area', 'parent and baby room'. No matter what name you use, Daisy Hill Hospital does not have one.

Daisy Hill sees a large number of Paediatric outpatients through its door with Clinics running daily however there are no designated facilities for parents/carers to take their children to. A trip to the hospital is frightening enough for a little one without be frightened by the noise of a hand dryer or having to scale an adult sized toilet. Things that might seem trivial to you or I, but to a child, especially one with special needs it can trigger anxiety even before they have reach the outpatient department.

Clinics can run late or maybe parents are taking turns minding a toddler while the other visits a sick relative; a room needs to be available where formula milk can safely be prepared and spoonfeeds heated.

The southern trust actively promotes breastfeeding through its baby friendly initiative and maternity literature however there are no facilities for a breastfeeding mother to go to quietly feed her baby. It is not a case that all nursing mothers should be feeding behind closed doors but rather a room is available should they wish to use it. Be it a mother just getting her confidence with feeding or a nosey infant who is too easily distracted in a busy environment to feed.

What about staff who return to work still expressing milk for their infants at home, where are the facilities for them?

Our local shopping centres have designated rooms for parents and children, yet a facility that's sole purpose is to promote health and wellbeing is falling short of doing just that. Daisy Hill need to be stepping up and meeting the needs of all its clients.
