Devon Ford started this petition to Southeastern University

The Confederate Flag is a symbol of slavery, oppression, and violence. This flag was representative of the southern states during the civil war. The main objective for the south was to fight to protect the institution of slavery. In today's society, it has been inherited by white supremacists groups and used for intimidation. At the least creates a hostile learning environment and ought to be banned from campus.

Eradicating the confederate flag from our campus by no stretch of the imagination addresses the much larger systematic issues that exist, but it is a symbolic posture against racism. Eradicating the flag is just a starting point, but there is no better place to begin.

Understandably, some view the flag as southern pride or different ideology from that perspective. However to be ignorant enough to disregard the historical facts and symbolism encompassing the confederate flag is not by any means a position we will accept.
