SoWashCo Taxpayers started this petition to South Washington County School District & School Board

On January 7th, District 833 Administration gave an overview of their proposed budget cuts which they are presenting to the School Board for a vote on January 21st.
We, the undersigned, assert that the proposed budget cuts are a direct violation of District 833's Code of Ethics II.B.1 which states that an Educational Administrator must make the well-being of students the fundamental value of all decision-making and actions. Poor budgetary planning by the predecessors of the current School Board & Superintendent does not absolve any of the current Board Members or District Administrators of their mandated responsibility to protect the well-being of students.

We further assert that:
-the district has not been forthcoming with their expenditures over the last several years and has denied taxpayers their right to see where every single dollar is being spent.
-the district is hiding behind a pandemic and states that these cuts must be made in short order to be in alignment with policy, yet it is a policy that they created and theoretically could amend.
-the district’s committee who oversaw the creation of the proposed cuts was composed mainly of upper administration who have a vested interest in suggesting cuts at the student service level rather than on administrative expenses.
-the district is creating a false sense of urgency to set the stage for a yet another operating levy vote in 2021.
-for too long the district has been “top heavy” with too much spent on administration at the expense of students and teachers.
-proposing to cut the Reading Recovery program will have a direct, immediate, & negative impact on students and will result in further increased costs down the road due to some students’ inability to use the most basic skill of literacy in their other courses and throughout their lives.
-proposing to permanently close any school during this pandemic is unconscionable and will have a direct, immediate, and negative impact on the mental, emotional, educational, and possibly even physical well-being of students.
-the proposed cuts will have a direct, immediate, and negative impact on students by increasing class sizes and overcrowding schools at a time when more distance between students is a guideline by the Centers for Disease Control.
-the proposed cuts to the paraprofessionals program will have a direct, immediate, and negative impact on students and teachers who are already spread too thin.
-closing the school with the most diverse student body and proposing cuts aimed at Special Education is a direct assault on the most vulnerable members of our community, violating the District's own Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion policies.

In closure, we, the undersigned, demand with the utmost vehemence that the South Washington County School Board reject the proposed budgetary cuts until outside auditors & mediators chosen by the taxpayers are allowed to conduct a full review of management of funds.
