Comber Community Group started this petition to South Staffordshire council

Recently Kinver has lost large areas of Green Belt land to residential development, these losses have been considered as necessary if we are to meet our housing obligations.

The parcel of land known as the Pony Paddock, at the junction of Comber Road and the Compa, is soon to be the subject of a planning application for residential use.  This land is Green Belt, it is within the Kinver Conservation Area (a part of the character area described as Comber Copse), it is outside of the development boundary, it has tree protection orders on its 50 native trees including two outstanding oak trees and an important view recorded by the council. The veteran trees and irreplaceable woodland habitat provide a valuable habitat for many cherished native species such as owls, foxes and hedgehogs.

We do not believe that the loss of this special parcel of land, commanding a prominent position at the base of Kinver Edge, can be justified for the benefit of one household. The loss does not outweigh the benefit.

The government provides opportunities for local communities to designate land as Local Green Space, conferring the same level of protection as Green Belt but also identifying areas that are important to a local community. Furthermore, land can be registered as an Asset of Community Value, providing the community with the opportunity to purchase the land should it become available for sale in the future, for the benefit of all for generations to come.

We, a group of residents from the Compa and Comber Road, are applying to have the land registered as an Asset of Community Value and designated as Local Green Space, but we need your help!

Please help us to demonstrate that our village is a source of great pride. Help us to prove that Kinver’s residents wish to protect the local distinctiveness of the area in designating this land for special protection. The parcel of land that we wish to nominate is precious to this community for so many reasons. It is of demonstrable significance for both its beauty, tranquillity and for its wildlife, providing a significant visual amenity to many.

Kinver does not benefit from any large areas of public open space within the conservation area and has no village green. This parcel of land is our village green, acting as a focal point within the built-up area. Our vision would be for a space unspoilt by development where local residents and the schools could come together to undertake projects to enhance the natural environment, for example planting further trees and native plants, installing a wildlife pond and making provision for the animals and birds such as hedgehog houses and bug hotels.

Conservation assets are irreplaceable and should be conserved in a manner appropriate to their significance, so that their contribution to quality of life can endure and be felt by both existing and future generations.  All of these things can be achieved without the inappropriate development of this irreplaceable habitat.

Please stand with us in saying no to development within our Green Belt, helping us to achieve Local Green Space designation for this precious land and secure its registration as an asset of community value. Let's lead the charge in reclaiming Kinver's green spaces for the benefit of the community.
