Moira Donaldson started this petition to South Lanarkshire Council

For the second year in a row South Lanarkshire Council are looking to make cost savings by removing janitors from Primary schools with under 100 pupils. This is irrespective if there is a nursery in place as the nursery children are not being counted in the figure.

Every year the number of pupils in our schools are increasing and therefore it's easy to see within a year or two those schools with under 100 children will exceed this number. Therefore the plans are short sighted.

The janitors have been tasked with all high risk touch point cleaning to keep our schools open during the COVID pandemic. Is this vital infection control not critical in the current climate?

They are also responsible for the security of our schools and protecting the staff and children.

Given the ongoing worry and uncertainty faced by our children at school why remove the janitors who are the one constant in our children's school lives throughout their school life.

Yet again the Council are taking out the front line workers. The ones who have worked throughout the pandemic to keep schools open and keyworkers children in school as well as ensuring our schools could safely open to all. If you remove the janitors additional cleaners will be required to fulfil the COVID infection control requirements so now clearly is not the time to consider such cuts!
