On Monday, January 18, South Korean President Moon Jae-in held a press conference during which he unveiled a new set of guidelines intended to protect adopted children from abuse.  The President declared: “Even after adoption, the adoptive parents need to check if the adoption is working out for them. So there should be complementary measures allowing them to cancel the adoption or if they still want to adopt a child, they should be able to change the child.”

While we appreciate President Moon's interest in reforming the adoption process, his insensitive remarks reveal the systemic issues and archaic principles endemic to adoption. 

In response, we, a group of Korean adoptee advocates, request an apology from President Moon and a meeting with key stakeholders to collaborate and ensure the safety of current and future adoptees' lives. The President must accept and understand the gravity of his words-- Adopted children are human beings, not commodities-- and we welcome his help in supporting the adoptees community.

지난 1월 18일 월요일에 열린 신년 기자회견에서 문재인 대통령은 입양아를 학대로부터 보호하기 위한 새로운 지침을 발표했습니다. 기자회견에서 대통령은 “입양 후에도 양부모는 입양이 잘 되고 있는 지 확인해야 하고, 양부모가 입양을 취소하거나 입양을 계속 원할 경우 입양아를 바꿀 수 있도록 하는 보완 조치가 있어야 합니다.” 라고 말했습니다.

문재인 대통령의 이러한 발언은 국내 입양기관에 보호를 맡긴 아동들의 안전을 보장하거나 증진시키지 못합니다.

최근 문재인 대통령의 입양아에 대한 비인간적인 발언에 대해 우리 한국 입양아 협회는 문재인 대통령에게 입양인들에 대해 사과할 것과 또한 모든 관련 당사자들과 협력하고 현재와 미래의 입양인들의 삶에 안전을 보장해 줄 것을 요구합니다. 대통령은 대통령 발언의 심각성을 받아들이고 이해해야 할 것입니다. 입양된 아이들은 상품으로 간주되어서는 안되는 소중한 인간입니다.
