Currently, the Splash Pad in town is open 10a-8p. While an excellent addition to the town, having the splash pad turn off the water supply as early as 8p excludes a wide variety of children who can make it to town later in the day. This can mean families packing up off the beach and families walking along the boardwalk at sunset.

However, it's local children that make up the majority of this group. Local parents need to work and cook dinner during daytime hours and for time reasons, may also try to avoid the peak hours of the tourist season. This puts a local arrival time in town at 8p. Arriving at the splash pad between 8p-10p, one can watch the faces of disappointed children- ones that dressed in suits all ready to play, only to push the button and be turned away.

The perfect part of extended hours is that it's not wasteful. With the randomness of Michigan's summer weather, if the pad is not in use, it sits dormant. Cold or dark evening hours, the pad can sit in wait for a warmer hour.

Further, extended hours into the evening promotes local businesses into to those hours as well. After using the splash pad, families can walk or drive into town to dry off, do some shopping, eat a late dinner.

The Splash Pad is seasonal; only open between Memorial Day and Labor Day, that already guarantees that the sun will be out in the later hours, providing a well lit area for children to play while parents enjoy the sunset.
