SD Clergy for kids started this petition to South Dakota Legislature South Dakota Legislature

South Dakota suffers when children are trapped in cycles of abuse and neglect. Empowering clergy to report suspected abuse frees them to speak for the voiceless and contributes to the well-being of our faith and our future.

If you are from SD, sign the petition and INCLUDE your district/town. Find your district at sdlegislature.gov. Also, if you are a member of the clergy please indicate so.

House Bill 1230 was narrowly defeated (2 votes) in 2019. Sign your name to the list of supporters to move this bill forward in the 2020 session. The bill adds clergy to the list of mandatory reporters in South Dakota. Clergy can STILL maintain privilege in the case of confidential communication, like a confession, but the bill will ensure greater protection of our state's most vulnerable populations by mandating that clergy report seen and suspected abuses.

More than 1200 kids in SD were confirmed victims of abuse in 2016 (with over 16,000 abuse reports). Kids who are abused and neglected face long-term struggles like impaired emotional and cognitive function, high rates of psychiatric disorders, and an increased likelihood of criminal activity. The cost of abuse, to our society, is more than $200,000 per victim according to a report from CDC.gov.

SD is one of only FIVE states in the nation that doesn't require this already and many clergy believe it's time to step up and work with our state to take care of our kids.

Sign on to support the bill because our kids need more people willing to stand up for them.
