Charles H. Townes, winner of the 1964 Nobel Prize in Physics and the 2005 Templeton Prize, was born in Greenville, South Carolina in 1915. Townes grew up on a 20-acre farm on the site of what is now Bon Secours St. Francis Downtown.  He attended Greenville Senior High School and graduated from Furman University in 1935.  He won the Nobel Prize in Physics for his creation of the laser. The Templeton prize was awarded for "progress toward research or discoveries about spiritual realities".  Townes was religious and believed that science and religion are converging to provide a greater understanding of the nature and purpose of the universe. Townes died in January 2015.
