According to a recent report by AdvancEd, The School District of Pickens County is in jeopardy of losing accreditation due to governance issues including ethics, conflicts of interest, noncompliance with appropriate procedures and failure to promote the purpose of the school system.  Despite an organized effort by the community to voice concerns and request information, the board of trustees has provided no concrete information to ensure residents they are taking necessary measures to meet the requirements specified by AdvancEd.  Since the release of the report, the board of trustees continues to demonstrate poor governance by refusing public input and failing to provide information regarding major decisions, such as the sale of school district property, despite repeated requests by concerned citizens from all sectors of the community for more information. Many district employees feel intimidated and have expressed a need for advocates to voice their concerns.  Concerned citizens and business leaders anticipate further decline in morale and teacher retention, an immediate inability to recruit new business and a devastating loss of current business in Pickens County under the current school board leadership.

Opportunities to teach in Pickens County were once very coveted positions.  While neighboring districts are providing cost of living increases to their teachers, our district is restricting pay increases.  Salaries now lag behind neighboring counties despite the oustanding performance of our teachers and excellent teaching practices as observed and noted by AdvancEd.  The School District of Pickens County is the third largest employer in the county, and concerned citizens of Pickens County request the opportunity to elect a board of trustees that will re-build relationships characterized by mutual respect with district employees, families and community leaders.  We feel that disciplinary action will discourage future conflicts and provide incentive for board members going forward, whereas a lack of action could exacerbate the sense of powerlessness that many Pickens County residents already perceive.

Concerned citizens humbly and respectfully request your prompt attention to this urgent matter Governor Haley.
