With this petition, I intend on seeking in written law seeking a cap as to not only state how often rents can be increased in the state of South Carolina, but also by how much and that there should be an established time frame for residents to be able to plan for this increase. At the current time, there is zero or too broad of a spectrum of laws around this topic to give renters a sense of security. 

To give an example of this topic, the folks around me have been renting from the same people for anywhere between 16 and 2 years, the original owners increased rent approximately $50 a month, until said people were left with unprofessional notes on their doors threatening eviction or having a 36% increase in their rents after the property was allegedly sold. There are senior citizens living off of only social security, veterans, and families that have called this particular place home for all of these years and no protections. This is just one common story that is occurring in South Carolina and today, I am calling for something to change.
