Zuri Sadan started this petition to South African Human Rights Commission and

'Wathint' Abafazi, Wathint' Imbokodo'

in August 1956, over 20 000 women marched to protest against their oppression and presented a petition to the then Prime Minister, singing wathint' abafazi, wathint' imbokodo, an absolutely empowering expression of the power women have. In August 2019, 63 years later, we now once again have to realize that our women are under attack in South Africa and we need to channel and implement this power once again.

Our Mothers, Sisters, Daughters and Wives are being murdered on a scale that is becoming more and more worrisome, a Femicide growing to heartbreaking proportions. We currently have one of the highest rates of rape in the world and the senseless killing of innocent women and children needs to come to an end.

We can no longer allow this to be swept under the carpet and shrugged off as if these beautiful people were mere animals instead of the human beings they were.

This petition is to allow every female within South Africa, regardless of age, race, creed, social and financial status, to stay at home on the 27th of September 2019, in solidarity and commemoration of the innocent lives lost to a gross injustice. Women and children being stripped of their rights, their right to not live in fear, their right to safety. We need to put into effect the mindset that without women, our society will not function and eventually will cease to exist. If it means protesting the abhorrent state our country is currently in, then so be it. Lets use this opportunity to protest in peace, as silence lingers longer than noise. Lets show everyone how much our presence means when we are no longer around for them to rely on. Let everyone feel the emptiness in the streets, workplaces and schools when there are no women and children around them.

We need to start making our voices heard, we need to start showing our government that we will no longer be quiet about rapists and murderers getting bail and walking free, we need to be the voices of those who no longer have voices because they were silenced too early into their precious lives, let us shut down the country because when you strike a woman, you strike a rock.
