Concerned Deaf Community of South Africa
The reason why we want the incompetent SASLi, South African Sign Language interpreter, to be removed from the SABC news is due to the fact, for over 10 years she has not lived up to expectations.
She has not been conveying information accurately, according to the professional standards of SASLIs. We end up being misinformed and we are missing crucial information. Her signing/interpreting skills don't meet the standards of the level she is assigned to. Being SASLi at national level for various assignments, particular in South African Broadcasting Corporation, news bulletins, requires a highly competent SASLi who can meet the highest standards to execute his/her duties on the assignment, he/she is assigned to. He/she must be highly qualified for the position. Be familiar with various SASL dialects, comprehend Deaf culture, also not to mis-lead, mis-inform Deaf community/consumers during news bulletin proceedings.
Some Deaf people can't read subtitles. Thus, a SASLi on national television should strive to discharge her duties effectively and efficiently.
The current one is not meeting these requirements and expectations plus there is valid reason demanding her to be removed with immediate effect.
1. She has not improved her signing skills for the past 10 years.
2. She is depriving us crucial information with her poor signing skills.
3. As visual people our rights are being infringed to access information.
4. She must be removed with immediate effect from interpreting national TV news.
5. A new qualified, experienced SASLi with knowledge of TV interpreting must be appointed to replace her.
6. He/she must be interviewed by Deaf experts specializing in SASL and come highly recommend.
Thus, we can enjoy watching news bulletin without any frustrations.
With the brouhaha that has been taking cause on social media about her poor signing skills. The Deaf community have officially labeled her a fake interpreter. To avoid the previous Mandela's funeral episode being repeated. It's about time her duties are relieved, as a matter of extreme urgency.
