As of 3 May 2020, the whole of Africa has less cases than Belgium, a country of 11.2 million people and currently number 16 globally in terms of infections. Yet this continent is probably going to suffer the most from the long term economic impact of this lockdown.
South Africa is the most developed country in Africa and if the lockdown is ended now, we can still rebuild the economy and prevent a bloodbath of job losses, business closures and poverty and hunger. This will not only benefit South Africa but the whole of Africa as well.
The government told us a that 2-week extension To the original 3 weeks would buy time to build the medical capacity to deal with future cases. We listened and we obeyed. This must be true because the politicians keep saying how well we are behaving on TV.
it’s now time to restore our faith in government by ending the lockdown immediately, allow businesses to reopen and get the economy started again. Our economy was fragile before this pandemic started due to looting and corruption. We’ve been downgraded to junk by all the major ratings agencies and this will not improve if we don’t have a functioning economy. Please think about our children’s futures. We cannot afford this to go on for a day longer. Please end the lockdown now.
