SOS President Obama: Take Action on Climate Change NOW!
My name is Rachel Frizell, I am 14 years old, and I live in New York City. My school and neighborhood were flooded during Hurricane Sandy, and we went without electricity for many days. It will be a long time before my city recovers.
I am Nelson Kanuk. I am 17 years old and I live in Kipnuk, Alaska. My family, and most of my village, will soon need to move off of our land because the permafrost is melting so quickly. Water from the bay frequently reaches our front door.
My name is Jaime Lynn Butler, I am 12 years old, and I used to live in Cameron, Arizona before the heat and drought dried up our water. We had to transport water for my horse, Charlie, and wound up having to sell him. I live in Flagstaff now, but I miss my community.
The scary part is, these are not just freak storms or an isolated events. This is the new normal. We are just a few of the millions of kids in America whose lives are already impacted by the climate crisis. And it is only going to get worse if we don't join together to solve it. That's why we are calling on our President to take a stand for our generation, and lead a National Climate Summit to highlight solutions to make our communities safer from climate change.
We know that climate change is a real threat to our communities, our homes, our families, and our lives. Addressing the climate crisis needs to be a priority for our nation. Please join us in pressuring President Obama to stand by his word to hold a national conversation on climate change by leading a National Climate Summit and commit to solutions for a sustainable future.
On behalf of the youngest generation,
Rachel, Nelson, and Jaime
- President Obama
I stand with the youngest generation to call on you to lead a National Climate Summit NOW! Our futures are at stake.
2012 was the warmest year on record, many of our nation’s crops continue to suffer under drought conditions, and the West Antarctic Ice Sheet is melting twice as fast as projected. Climate change is a national and global emergency. Our nation has a moral and ethical responsibility to build resilience to the impacts of climate change and to reduce the polluting emissions which contribute to the problem.
