State, County, and Local Public Officials of the Northeast San Fernando Valley:

As a stakeholder of Sylmar, I refuse to turn a blind eye to the state of emergency happening in my neighborhood in regards to homelessness. As Sylmar families and youth, we see this growing epidemic every day -on Foothill, on Hubbard, Glenoaks, Polk, San Fernando Road —along our main streets and the 210 freeway.

This issue is well documented on the 2016 Annual Homeless Count, which indicates a 35% increase of unsheltered individuals within the San Fernando Valley. Here in Sylmar, the homeless population has grown in just a few short years from a handful, to a few hundred, and now more than an estimated 500 of the 1,206 counted in the Northeast San Fernando Valley.

We, the people, urge all elected officials representing the underserved Northeast San Fernando Valley to take immediate action to end the human suffering in our community. Discussions are no longer enough. We need something built now. Please find below our demands:

(1) Publicly come out in a press conference at the Sylmar Winter Shelter by December 1st and explain to the community your specific plan to end the suffering of the homeless.

(2) Although the Sylmar Winter Shelter (Dec-Mar) has been helpful, it has not ended homelessness in Sylmar. We need a year-round solution. Therefore, we urge you to fund and support the development of a permanent drop-in center in Sylmar. This center is to link the homeless to shelter and transition to wellness services in our community year round. We want to see this shelter available by April 2017.
