Overturn The Ohio State Blanket Ban on IFC Fraternities

We, the students of The Ohio State University, hereby petition the OSU administration to reconsider and/or remove the temporary blanket suspension of IFC fraternities. Greek Life at The Ohio State University is an extremely unique community. We pride ourselves on our relaxed approach towards fraternities and sororities and wear our letters proudly. We are a philanthropic and inclusive group that wants nothing more than to see Greek Life thrive. Unfortunately, on November 16th of 2017, an email was issued by Sorority & Fraternity Life that all IFC Fraternities are under suspension because of the actions of a few. The email stated that due to 11 of the 37 IFC chapters being under investigation, all fraternities in the council are suspended from “non-essential chapter activities” until at least January. This kind of blanket punishment is unacceptable, as the majority of the chapters affected have done absolutely nothing wrong. We, as members of the greek community, are pushing to overturn this decision immediately. This decision affects us all; not only the fraternities, but also the sororities and the philanthropies that these men put so many hours into. Coming from a school that pushes the ideas of social responsibility and being held accountable for one's own actions, this decision came as a surprise. Fraternities who have had clean records for years have been forced to cancel events that cost thousands of dollars and a lot of planning time. We completely understand the need for investigations and disciplinary action towards those who have not held up the values of their university or national organization. What we do not and will not understand is the need for a generalizing punishment on those who have done nothing but good for the community.

Several members of the General Assembly of the Undergraduate Student Government intend on passing a resolution that supports this overturning as well. We will be meeting to propose and vote on this resolution on Wednesday, November 29th at 6:30PM in the Ohio Union. General Assembly is always open to attendance from the public and comments are taken from the public as well. We hope to see you there as we take on this issue.
