Students Against Sonny Coalition started this petition to USG Board of Regents and

In mid March 2021, the AJC reported that the USG Board of Regents is likely to appoint Sonny Perdue as Chancellor of the University System of Georgia. Our student coalition strongly opposes Perdue’s candidacy and urges the Board of Regents not to appoint him. We’re speaking up because Perdue is unqualified and a proven threat to higher education in our state.

Many of us are able to access college because of the HOPE scholarship and other financial aid programs for hard-working Georgia students - Perdue has a track record of making college less accessible, affordable, and high quality.

Why are we opposing Perdue for USG chair? He is completely inexperienced in education, and this appointment - though it shouldn't be - is blatantly political. If appointed, Perdue would oversee 26 public colleges and universities with a $9.62 billion annual budget, 48,000 faculty and staff, and more than 333,000 students. If those numbers don’t alarm you, his voting record on Georgia education bills should.

What is Sonny Perdue’s record on higher education? He has a history of harming and withholding millions of dollars from HBCUs, military colleges, HOPE scholarship access, dropout prevention services, and disadvantaged youth. He’s never worked in higher education, and he’s notoriously fiscally irresponsible.

What do we as students, faculty, staff, and fellow Georgians demand?

  • No Sonny Perdue. His record says it all.
  • Transparency. We demand that the USG Board of Regents exercise transparency in the appointment process.
  • Experience. We demand the USG Board of Regents select an experienced Chancellor. It is a stain on USG’s reputation to engage in a political appointment instead of prioritizing experience and qualifications.
  • Student Values and Voices. Students, the tuition paying backbone of USG, deserve input in this appointment process. We demand the USG Board of Regents provide adequate opportunity for student input.

Sonny Perdue is unfit to be USG Chancellor. The future of higher education in Georgia is at stake, and our coalition is committed to fighting for the millions of Georgians who would face the consequences of this appointment.
