Increase Safety Measures at Somerville High School

My name is Rebecca McConnell and I am a senior at Somerville High School. All my life, I have never known a time without the fear of terrorism and the fact that someone can go shoot up any public place whenever they want to. Due to recent events, my fear of dying while attending school has rapidly increased. At Somerville High School, the only security we have is Mr. Mantone. The only way they have tried to protect us is through locking the doors. At Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, FL, the shooter disguised himself as a student. Since, Somerville allows juniors to have open lunch, there is no reason why anyone who has the drive to attack can hide themselves and come into the school during those three lunch periods. Something needs to be done to protect us. I am NOT saying that teachers should be armed. Some things that could be done to make my peers and I actually feel safe while at school is having a police officer at school during school hours, a dedicated person to watch the security cameras at all time, increased awareness of students mental health and making the courtyard not accessible to the outside. Those are just a few examples of ways to make my classmates and I feel safer while attending school. This is in no means to disrespect the security we have now, but to try to help increase safety for students. Heightened security does not do anything but help us feel safer.  As someone who knows a student at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School and what she went through on February 14th, I NEVER want anyone at Somerville High School to have to go through what she and her classmates had to go through. No student deserves to lose their live while trying to learn. This is not meant to be a political statement, but more a cry for safety. I very much hope that these situations will trigger action in our school system and for greater safety measures to be implemented FAST. If you agree that safety measures should be implemented at Somerville High School and other Somerville/Branchburg Schools, please sign this petition and share. Thank you.
