Amy Francis started this petition to Somerton town council and

I’ve created this petition to help people who are in a similar situation as me. I have lived in Somerton all of my life, went to school here, worked here.

I have been looking for a house for my fiancé and I , and a very well behaved rescue dog for the last 6 months. We have been to various house viewings, applied to every property that has come up on right move, we are also on the council list, but with no success.

The estate agents are telling me it is like a lottery, there are 40 applications per house that is advertised in Somerton and it is basically picking a name out of a hat and that decides who are successful.

I have seen 1 house that has been available on the council list in the last 6 months, to which we have been shortlisted to number 97.

Over the last 5 years there has been a few housing developments but unfortunately the council selfishly decided against putting a clause to state a certain amount of houses has to go to Somerton residents. Also the cost of the houses have been in excess of over £200,000. If you are working minimum wage which a lot of people are in the town, you CANNOT afford this.

The new development at Somerton mead has a total of 3 help to buy ownerships available, which in my opinion is horrendous, and not giving residents a chance to stay here.

The council are allowing this to happen, and no thought is being given to locals who want to stay in their home town.

I feel as though we are being pushed out, my generation are being forced to buy in the bigger towns away from their support network, work & familys.

The council needs to act NOW before it’s too late. Or maybe it is too late?

Please like and share this group to all the residents of Somerton who are growing considerably concerned with the state of the towns housing. We need to act to encourage the council to act to support its residents.
